"Hakuu," the title of this print refers to a shower. The print is a masterpiece deftly depicting people caught in a sudden shower of driving rain and the surrounding scene. A man races uphill to a mountain pass with a straw raincoat over his head, a pair of palanquin bearers have covered their carriage with a waterproof sheet to protect the passenger, and a hoe-carrying farmer rushes past a traveler who is going downhill with his umbrella half closed. Background bamboo groves swaying violently in gusts of wind are depicted in three different gradations of color. The print is so superbly realistic that, if you listen carefully, you can almost hear the cries of the depicted figures.
