Arimatsu tie-dyed fabrics, the title of this print, are a special local product developed with the encouragement and protection of the ruling Tokugawa family of Owari province. The print shows tie-dyeing houses lining a street. Their imposing exteriors indicate their prosperity. Hiroshige accentuates the light interior of the houses by shading their roofs and trees in India ink. Also, he depicts women as the only travelers passing along the street, no doubt because of their association with the Arimatsu tie-dyed fabrics.
