This is a landscape of "Hikimanono-hara," which commands a distant view of Hamamatsu Castle. The subject matter consists mainly of a big cedar tree standing by the highway and a number of people grouped around it. Among them is a man warming his hands over a fire at the foot of the tree, a palanquin bearer standing with his bare back to the fire, a traveler wrapped in a raincoat and a girl with a baby on her back. Somehow this spot seems to have a feeling of warmth about it, in sharp contrast to the desolate wintry scene depicted in the rest of the picture. The large column of smoke and the curved line of the grass-covered bank in the foreground are effective touches.
