Shinagawa is the first station where travelers going to Kyoto stop overnight. Travelers alight from their palanquins and bow deeply to the daimyo procession moving along the highway at the foot of Yatsuyama hill, while teahouse maids watch the passing spectacle, having been forced to suspend their soliciting of customers for the moment. At the left, cargo boats come and go under full sail in Sodegaura Bay while others have lowered sail and are at anchor. An atmosphere of ease carried by a breeze from the sea prevails in this picture.
