Travelers reach Kawasaki when they cross the Tama River aboard a ferry at the Rokugo crossing. The Tama River is the first big river they come to after leaving Edo. On board the ferry are men and women, as well as entertainers who apparently have come to worship at Kawasaki Daishi Temple and pray for protection from evil. The pose of the boatman, who stands firmly with a long bamboo pole stuck in the water, is depicted humorously. On the opposite bank a pack horse and a palanquin bearer are waiting for the ferryboat.
