Otsu is the last of the 53 stations on the Tokaido Highway. This teahouse "Hashiri-i" was named after the well in the left corner of the print, which was called "hashiri-i" (literally, a running water well) because spring water ceaselessly poured from it. The "hashiri-i rice cakes" sold here were a local specialty. The print depicts an oxcart driver calling out to a comrade in the rear to have a break. A man scooping up spring water at the well is unmistakably a local resident. The child tottering up to the man is charmingly portrayed.
