22 Fujieda "Changing Men and Horses"
This print, which depicts the transfer of loads in front of a wholesale store at Fujieda post town is a unique work that should be called a genre picture rather than a landscape. The wholesale store is a relay station where tired carriers and horses are replaced by fresh ones, and loads are forwarded to the next destination. Some men are loading and unloading horses while others are wiping their perspiring brows or resting. One man talks to a local government official who is holding a ledger. This realistic and detailed portrayal of various people reproduces the atmosphere of hustle and bustle of a relay station.
