A twilight scene in Numazu that impressively features a large moon in the dark blue sky. A mother and daughter on pilgrimage plod their weary way to the post town along the Kise River, and an ascetic is shown carrying on his back a big mask of a long-nosed goblin on his way back from Konpira Shrine in Shikoku. This is the only one among the 53 woodblock prints of landscapes along the Tokaido Highway in which the moon is depicted. The white full moon, the rows of white-walled houses, the road surface shining white and the white costume of the ascetic combine to portray the strange brightness and pathos of a moonlit night.
