Portrayed in this picture is a scene in which people are crossing the Sakawa River before entering Odawara post town. This is an unusual picture for Hiroshige, characterized by the angularity of his depiction of the Hakone mountains soaring in the background and his coloration of them. At the foot of a mountain far beyond the solitary pine tree in the middle distance are seen the houses of the post town and Odawara Castle while in the foreground a daimyo procession crosses the Sakawa River. A large team of porters carry a platform on which an elaborate palanquin is placed. Noteworthy is the skillful portrayal of people on the river banks in miniature.
