Oiso being the site of the tragic love between Soga Juro, the elder of the Soga brothers famous for their vendetta, and the courtesan, Tora Gozen, the rain which falls around the time when the Soga brothers successfully avenged their father's death was called "Toraga ame," or Tora's rain, after the tears shed by Tora Gozen when parting from Juro. Depicted in this picture is the highway just outside Oiso post town. Drenched by the heavy rain, a man and his horse plod their way with heavy steps. Beyond a paddy field with its stacks of straw, there is an attractive view of pine trees along the seashore. The sea sparkling white shows Hiroshige's rich sensitivity.
