This picture depicts the expansive Sagami Plain. "Nawate Road," which is the title of this picture, is a footpath running between paddy fields. The road resembles a country thoroughfare rather than a highway. The road lined at intervals with pine trees, a signpost and notice-boards, half-naked hikyaku (express couriers) hurrying toward Edo, two men carrying an empty palanquin on their way back to Oiso, itinerant Buddhist priests and farmers seen in the distance ? all of these lend a certain melancholy to this scene of travelers at dusk. The mountain with a round top towering in the center is Mount Koma, and a snow-capped Mount Fuji is seen behind it.
