05  Totsuka "Motomachi Forked Road"

This place with a signpost reading "Left for Kamakura" is where the road forks for Ofuna and Kamakura. Hanging under the eaves of the teahouse "Komeya" on the bank of the Kashio River is a wooden plate showing that this is an officially designated resting place. The various people who appear in this picture - a traveler alighting from a horse, a woman traveler unfastening the strings of her straw hat, the proprietress of a teahouse welcoming guests, and an old man leisurely walking over the bridge - as well as the different shades of the house roofs marvelously portray the approach of dusk.
